Inherent curiosity and susceptibility to predators make sheep and goats one of the most difficult animals to fence. Vertical spacing must be close enough to deter them from putting their heads through the fence, while simultaneously keeping predators out.
Sheep and goat fence produced with an S-Knot and a 4” x 4” opening is the most popular fence for sheep and goats. A stronger option is high tensile fixed knot with either a 3” or 12" vertical spacing. Be sure to never use 6" spacing for sheep and goats. Both of these knots have a smooth side which helps prevent contact injury to the animal
Post spacing is another important aspect to consider, for sheep/goat applications we recommend 8 to 12 feet. Spacing between line wires on your woven wire fence should be 4” x 4”. 3” or 12” vertical stay spacing are other options.
Never use a 6” spacing for goats - they will push their heads through the opening and get stuck in the fence.
